VICENTE ROMO GONGORA

Vicente Romo Gongora, of Texas City, Texas, formerly of Galveston, passed away May 5, 2014.

Funeral Mass will be Friday, May 9, 2014, at 11:00 a.m. at St. Mary of the Miraculous Medal Church in Texas City. Burial will follow at HayesGrace Memorial Park in Hitchcock under the direction of Emken Linton Funeral Home of Texas City. The family will receive visitors at the funeral home Thursday, May 8, 2014, 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. with a rosary at 7:00 p.m.

Vicente was born January 22, 1930 at the Kennedy Ranch in Coupland, Texas to Clemente Gongora Sr. and Severiana Romo Gongora. The family moved to Galveston, Texas in 1938. He attended Ball High School and graduated in 1949 and was a member of the ROTC. Vicente was a man of many musical talents. In his younger days, he played the trumpet, the organ and the guitar along with his brothers. He sang and played the organ for Father Salvador Rodriguez at the Mexican Catholic Church in Galveston in the early 50s. He played baseball with the Mexican American League in the early 50s and he helped coach teams in Little League Baseball. He was a member of Lulac Council 151 for many years.

Mr. Gongora is preceded in death by his parents his brothers, Pedro, Espiridion, Antonio, Dionicio, Tomas, Clemente, Jr., Reymundo sister, Juanita and soninlaw, Thomas Mahoney, Jr.

Survivors include his wife, Dolores Escalante Gongora, of 63 years and his 2 daughters, Sylvia Gongora Bob Doney of Galveston, and JoAnn Mahoney of Texas City. He also leaves behind his grandchildren and great grandchildren who were the loves of his life and who all referred to him endearingly as PawPaw. Grandchildren Trey Salinas Rhonda Toming of Austin, Andrea King Joe, of Texas City and Kimberly Faust George of Texas City. Great grandchildren Lyndsey Harvey, Riley Cooper, Ryne Cooper, and Jagger King, of Texas City Tripp Halstead of Santa Fe and Jake and Sarah Salinas of Austin. Special thanks to his sisterinlaw, Gary Gongora, and nephew Tony Gongora, who were very supportive and dear friends to the end. He also leaves behind numerous nephews and nieces and other relatives and friends.

Pallbearers are Trey and Jake Salinas, Riley and Ryne Cooper, Joe King and George Faust. Honorary Pallbearer, Jagger King.
