Ol Dad grew up and attended public schools in Marshalltown, Iowa. At the age of 14 he went to work for the Red Crown Bowling Alley as a pinsetter for 4 per person per game to help his family during the Great Depression. He later worked for Fisher Governor Company in Marshalltown before joining the Army Air Corps in 1943. He was trained as a mechanic on B17 Bombers, and proudly served his country in the Pacific Theater.

After being discharged from the Army, he returned to Marshalltown where he met Jane. They were married on December 23, 1947. Lured by the prospect of work in the booming petrochemical industry on the Texas Gulf Coast, they settled in Texas City in early 1948. Ol Dad soon went to work for Union Carbide Corporation. They settled in as transplanted Texans, and began to raise their family. Although he made his home in Texas for over 60 years, he continued to love Iowa and always looked forward to returning up home to visit. Ol Dad retired from UCC in 1980, after 32 years of service.

After he retired, he and Ol Mom enjoyed woodworking, and would often participate in local craft shows. He took great pride in his woodworking skills, which always showed in his finished products. He passed the love of woodworking on to his grandsons, Jake and Matt Hudnall, both of whom continue to carry on the tradition of woodworking.

Ol Dad also enjoyed traveling out West. He loved the mountains of western Wyoming and Montana, and especially loved visiting Mt. Rushmore National Memorial in the Black Hills of South Dakota.

He spent the last few years of his life living with his grandson, Brady, in Wichita, Kansas. The family would like to thank Brady and his wife, Sara, for the loving care and devotion they gave him during this time. Ol Dad especially enjoyed being around their daughter, Kinley.
