Shirley Harrington Buckner, 79, of Uvalde, formerly of Houston, passed beyond the veil on August 30, 2015, at Cimarron Place Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Corpus Christi, Tx.
She was born the oldest child of Randall Eugene Harrington and Ora (Dimples) Martin Harrington on March 14, 1936 in Galveston, Texas. Following graduation from Ball High School in Galveston she attended nursing school at UTMB Galveston, receiving her LVN, and later her RN from Alvin Jr. College. Shirley worked as a nurse in supervisory positions at Danforth Memorial Hospital and Bayview Psychiatric Hospital, retiring from The Faber Research Clinic in 2001. Through her associations as a nurse and the careers of her sons, Shirley developed a lifelong respect and love for all first responders and participated in many disaster drills alongside them.
Shirley loved music, especially big band music, spirituals, and anything sung by the blended voice of her granddaughters. Several years ago she chose the music for her funeral service and directed the manner in which it was to be sung. She loved family history, including relating interesting stories of ancestors and her childhood in Bolivar, and for several years worked in the Family History Center of the LDS Church in Clear Lake, Texas. She enjoyed crocheting and sewing, having taught granddaughters to crochet and sewing a granddaughter's baptism dress, and to read, a passion she also passed on to her granddaughters and great-grandchildren. But the true passion and loves of her life were her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren ranging in age from 1 to 15, "Nonnie's Angels" she called them, and for several years after retirement she was blessed to live in the four generation household of her son with two of her great-grandchildren, reading stories to them, enjoying Disney movies with them, and doling out Gummy Bears upon request. She also had a great love of dogs and in her nursing home years looked forward eagerly to visits from her two "four-legged angels" - Callie and Logan.
She is survived by sons James E. Buckner, Jr., and his wife Rebecca of Corpus Christi, Tx and Robert Buckner and partner Sherrie Cloud of LaMarque, Tx as well as Jim and Becky's daughters and their husbands, Elizabeth and Steve Ericksen of Hooper, Utah, Sarah and Joseph Jeter of Mont Belvieu, Tx, Melissa and Michael Mathews of Damon, Tx, and Jessica and Andrew Davis of Lockhart, Tx.
She is also survived by her fifteen great-grandchildren, "Nonnie's Angels", Benjamin James, Haley Elizabeth, Jacob, and Zachary Ericksen, Nathaniel, Isaac, Caleb Harrington, Rachel, and Tirzah Jeter, Tess and Piper Mathews, and Claire, Luke, Jonathan James, and Rebecca Wren (Wrennie) Davis. Also surviving are brothers, Randall Eugene Harrington, Jr. and wife Deanna of Brazoria, Tx and Emmitt Wayne Harrington and wife Rita of Hitchcock, Tx as well as numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
