Randel Calhoun Hunter, born September 27, 1925 in Texas City, Texas, died peacefully with his wife and two daughters at his side on Sunday, June 30th, 2013, in New Braunfels, TX, where he resided in retirement.
Services will be 3:00 pm Sunday, July 7 at Emken Linton Funeral Home in Texas City, with Rev. Dr. Rodney Wood officiating. Burial will follow at Galveston Memorial Park Cemetery in Hitchcock. Visitation will begin at 2:00 pm at the funeral home.
Mr. Hunter was devoted to his country, serving in the Air Force, 194346. He was married to Mary Middagh Hunter for 67 years with whom he was blessed with two daughters, Deborah Potthoff of New Braunfels and Rebecca Wood of Baton Rouge, LA, 7 grandchildren, and 16 greatgrandchildren. In 1946 he began his lifelong career in Texas City with Union Carbide for whom he went on to be Site Manager in Taft, Louisiana, Sisterville, West Virginia, Antwerp, Belgium, Boundbrook, New Jersey, and Danbury, Conneticut, as well as Assistant Site Manager in Saudi Arabia. His time in Danbury was a highlight of his career as he was involved in the building of Union Carbides world headquarters. While living abroad, he and his wife traveled extensively in Europe, Asia, and Africa. Mr. Hunter also served his community well in the following capacities: member of the Masonic Lodge for 62 years, member of El Mina Shriners, drum major of the Drum and Bugle Corps, a founding member and first chairman of the board of St. Johns United Methodist Church, an organizing board member of Carbide Federal Credit Union, a founder of Carbide Volunteers, a founding member and first president of Foundation for the Future, chair of the Handicap and Retarded Association, founding board member and first president of Texas City Museum, and a volunteer with Habitat for Humanity, and member of the board of trustees of First United Methodist Church of New Braunfels. He and his wife Mary were on the team that represented Texas City when it was selected an All American City.
Mr. Hunter was preceded in death by his beloved parents, Mr. and Mrs. A.C. Hunter, and his brothers, Sidney, Don, and Kenneth Hunter.
