Texas City historian, educator and community leader Meriworth McMillan Mabry died peacefully at home July 8, 2013. She is survived by her husband of 54 years, Edwin S. Mabry, sons Paul Barbara, Cliff Anne, grandsons Wayne and Rob, and great grandson, Jule Seth Mabry.
A proud BOI Born on the Island in 1930 to Lonnie L. and Jewel Wedgeworth McMillan, Meriworth graduated from the University of Mary HardinBaylor in 1950, earned a Masters from the University of Houston Clear Lake, was named a Distinguished Alumna of UMHB. She taught history in public schools, primarily in Texas City, and was a member of the inaugural faculty of San Jacinto College South. In 1965 she was named the Outstanding Young Educator of Texas and honored at the White House. She was named Texas Citys Outstanding Citizen in 1972 and is a Rotary International Paul Harris Fellow.
Her deep love of Texas City and its history coupled with her passion for community service guided her to leadership roles in a number of areas. Meriworth was instrumental as General Chair of the 50th anniversary book project We Were There Personal Accounts of the 1947 Texas City Disaster. She authored her universitys Centennial book in 1995 led Girl Scout Troops organized community historical events and was an active member of Memorial Lutheran Church for over five decades.
Visitation with the family will be Thursday, July 11 from 5 to 7 p.m. at EmkenLinton Funeral Home, 5100 Emmett Lowry Expressway Hwy. 1764. Following a private committal, services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, July 12 at Memorial Lutheran Church, 2021 29th Street N, Texas City. Honorary Pallbearers will be Rob Mabry, Wayne Mabry, Phil Darby, R.M. Wedgeworth, Dale McMillan, and Paul McMillan, with deepest thanks to dedicated care givers Johnette, Eris, Margaret, Marilyn, Laquitta and Devonna.
