Mary Elizabeth Povse, 74, of Texas City passed away Wednesday, December 21, 2016. She was born on July 20, 1942 in Chicago, Illinois to Robert Daniel and Helen Marie Leahy.
Funeral services will be held at St Mary of the Miraculous Medal Catholic Church at 10am, Friday, January 13, 2016. Burial will follow at Mt Olivet Cemetery in Dickinson, Texas. Visitation will be 5 to 7 pm, Thursday, January 12, 2016, with a Rosary to begin at 7pm at Emken-Linton Funeral Home.
Mary grew up in Oak Park, Illinois attended Oak Park-Forest Hieghts High School and later graduated from Springfield Junior College with a teaching degree. She began her teaching career in Cicero, Illinois. Over the years she also taught in Cahokia, IL, Texas City and San Jose dos Campos, Brazil. She retired from Amoco Federal Credit Union in 2002 where she is fondly remembered as that friendly voice that greeted you on the phone.
Mary was a member of the Xi Delta Omicron, where she held many different positions. She was involved with the Texas City Heritage Association and was a Jaycee wife. Mary was a long time member of St Thomas Alter Society and parishioner of St Mary's Catholic Church in Texas City.
Mary is preceded in death by her father, mother and husband, Lawrence James Povse. She is survived by her daughter, Laureen King and husband Michael, son, Lawrence Joseph Povse, grandchildren, Ryan, Erin, Bailey, Lance, Jenna and Reed, brothers, James Leahy and wife Sue, Robert Leahy and wife Patricia, Edward Leahy and wife Barbara, Patrick Leahy and wife Debra, sister Deborah Leahy and many beloved nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
