Maria Salazar

Maria Herminia Gomez Salazar, a long-time resident of Texas City, passed away in her home surrounded by her loving family on June 22, 2017 at the age of 82.

She was born September 28, 1934 in McAllen, Texas to Rodolfo Delfino Gomez and Isaura Galvan Gomez. Maria attended Sacred Heart Catholic School in McAllen, graduated 8th grade there and moved to Galveston, TX in 1947, where she attended Dominican and Ursuline Academy Catholic Schools graduating from Ursuline in 1953, where she made many lifelong friends.

Maria married Daniel Salazar in 1957, who was in the Marine Corps, and began an adventurous life as a Marine Corps wife. In 1959, she travelled with her husband and their first born, Antoinette, to their first duty station in California. From that first trip to 1974, as a Marine Corps wife, Maria lived in Michigan where her children, Marcus and Margaret were born, South Carolina where her youngest, Sylvia was born, and various places in the United States.

Upon her husband's retirement in 1974, Daniel and Maria relocated their family for the last time to Texas City where she later began employment with Texas City Independent School District, retiring after 20 years. During her retirement years, Maria enjoyed taking care of and being with her grandchildren and extended family, sewing, various arts and crafts, traveling, and being involved with her faith by volunteering at Our Lady of Fatima Catholic School in Texas City. She was also a long-time member of St. Mary of the Miraculous Medal Catholic Church's St. Thomas Altar Society group.

Maria is preceded in death by her parents, and brother, Frank Gomez. She is survived by her husband, Daniel M. Salazar, her children, Antoinette Morrell (Rusty), Deacon Marcus Salazar (Isabel), Margaret Huff (Robert), and Sylvia Zaro (Jimmy); grandchildren Maria and Gloria Morrell, Marisa Salazar, Marcus and Steven Huff, Jasmine, Alexandria, and Daniel Zaro; her sisters Sylvia G. Hernandez, Gloria Bethea McDougle, and Joyce Ramirez as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

A very sincere thank-you to the staff of Traditions Hospice and Griswold Home Care.
