LEE LORENZO EMIL GASKILL passed away Saturday, October 11th, from natural causes. He was born August 18, 1951, to Jewel E. Schulz dec. and Lorenzo M. Gaskill, Jr. in Houston, Texas. He is survived by Melinda Huhn Gaskill, his loving wife of 30 years parents Billie Ruth Ballard and Lorenzo M. Gaskill, Jr. niece Stefanie and Stefanies mother, Maritza Mayer sisterinlaw Joyce Black and husband Dr. Steven Black cousins Clyde and Carol Schulz and children Catherine, Cristina, Carl, Curtis Lisa and Thomas Doyle and children Riley and Carter and Jimmy and Karen Schulz and children Chad and Jeremy. He was predeceased by his brother, Clayton Bruce Gaskill. Lee attended Garden Villas Elementary, Albert Thomas Middle School and graduated from Ross Sterling High School of Houston in 1969, where he played football. He earned Bachelors and Masters Degrees from the University of Houston. Lee had a varied career in the field as a Certified Public Accountant, beginning with Texas Commerce Bank and landing with the wonderful family at Legacy Funeral Group. Lee was introduced to his wife on a blind date by his best friend who was married to a friend of Melindas sister. They celebrated their anniversary last month in Estes Park, CO where they had been invited by dear friends. Lee shared a love of photography with his brother who was a professional in the industry. Lee had a lifelong interest in the game of chess, beginning in middle school, where he was in the administrators office, not for being in trouble, but to play chess. He was involved with the monthly tournaments of the Houston Chess Club with a FIDE rating of std. 2000. Lee loved music, from rock music from his youth to a 20 year subscription with the Houston Symphony, and more recently, the Bach Vespers at Christ the King Lutheran Church. He had a passion for history, especially the War Between the States. He was a fan of the Houston Astros, Houston Rockets, James Bond movies and Shakespeare, enjoying annual UH productions at Miller Outdoor Theatre and the UT Winedale summer season. Lee has a closet full of participant shirts from 5K runs throughout Houston. Lee and Melinda attended many annual Ahrens Family reunions in Schulenburg, and then later organized them, which led to membership with the Houston Genealogical Forum, where he was completing a term as a director. He was a member of Houston Investors Association, an Alley Theatre usher, a past Airline UMC board member and New Horizons Sunday School Class teacher. Lee worked with the AUMC youth group, even to the point of camp counselor at Lakeview, which led him to serve and support UM Army. Lee was a KUHFKUHT now Houston Public Media member and KUHF campaign volunteer since the beginning of the station. He appreciated art, from Monet and art in the Louvre, to quilts at the International Quilt Festival. As a Heights resident, he was a member of the Heights Association, past treasurer and longtime home tour volunteer. A chocoholic, he acquired a new favorite Trader Joes ginger cookies, shaped like cats. When friends moved overseas, the Gaskills acquired their first pet, Fred, who ruled their home for nine years until age 21, never to be replaced, though Tigger the Tabby and Feeder the Black White entertained him. One of Lees proudest moments was being present as his niece, Stefanie, graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point and was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant in the US Army. A celebration of Lees life will be held at First United Methodist Church Downtown, 1320 Main Street Clay, Houston TX 77002 with viewing 10 am, followed by a Celebration Ceremony 11 am with a reception to greet family and friends afterwards on October 17, 2014.
