John Walker, Jr.

April 25, 1927 — October 13, 2015

John Walker, Jr.

John A. Walker, Jr., 88, passed away, peacefully, and went to be with his Lord on Tuesday, October 13, 2015 at his residence in Texas City.

He was born in Jackson, Mississippi on April 25, 1927 to Jessie Bardwell Walker and John A. Walker, Sr. He was a dedicated member of Holy Trinity Episcopal Church in Dickinson, Texas, as well as, a true leader and unsurpassed inspiration in the local Alcohol Anonymous, with 54 ½ years of sobriety.

After he proudly served in the United States Navy, he founded John A. Walker Roofing Company in LaMarque, Texas in 1949. John was a great success story of someone who grew up during the depression, was poor, had a limited education, and built an incredible business from scratch. He had fun, was kind, loving, and quite the character for those who knew him. He had "swagger" before the word existed. He had many interests and hobbies, but he truly loved fishing, hunting, and all outdoor activities. He also took pleasure in his garden, but nothing could compare to the happiness he experienced when he shared what he grew with everyone he knew. In his younger days, he loved riding and showing his cutting horses at the rodeos.

Big John, as he was known by his many, many friends, had a heart of gold and was loved and respected by all who met and knew him. Big John carried one dollar bills in his pocket and would give a "buck" to every grandchild, as well as, any other child he met, to put in their pocket. John was a very special person who had a very positive outlook on life that rubbed off on everyone who was around him and everyone knew him. Along the way, Big John made many, many friends, touched countless lives, and was deeply loved by many. He will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved him.

Those we love don't go away, they walk beside us every day. Unseen, unheard, but always near, still loved, still missed, and very dear.

John was preceded in death by his parents; his infant son, Gary Amos Walker; his brother, Robert Walker; his three brothers-in-law, Rufus King, Horace Darden, and Delbert White; and his nephews, Randy Darden and Chuck Longino.

He is survived by his daughter, Melody Walker of Texas City, Texas; his son, John A. Walker, III and wife, Nora of Santa Fe, Texas; his daughter, Monica Walker of LaMarque, Texas; his three sisters, Emma White of Luling, Louisiana, Frankie King of Beaumont, Texas, and Tommie Darden of Texas City, Texas; his sister-in-law, Joann Walker, of Irving, Texas. He is survived by twelve grandchildren, Billy Moore & wife, Toni; John Moore; Mike Chisum & wife, Jamila; Jessica Griego & husband, Johnny; Ashley Bennett; Kasey Baker & wife, Andrea; and Jacob Baker & wife, Tabitha. John was blessed with twenty-two great grandchildren, Jeffrey Prescott & wife, Jessica, Nicholas Moore, Dusty Moore, Desireé Moore, Syeed Chisum, Isaac Chisum, Bryce Griego, Brayen Griego, Calley Bennett, Avin Bennett, Kelsie Lewis, Ray Yeamans, Zach Yeamans, Christopher Baker, Caleb Baker, Benjamin Baker, Jayden Baker, Bailey Baker, Lillian Baker, and Wyatt Baker.
