Born December 24, 1924 to George and Katie Freeman Stokes in Henderson, Texas went peacefully in his sleep on April 8, 2013.
Mr. Stokes is preceded in death by his parents, wife Dorothy and son John, Jr.
He is survived by his daughter Susan and husband Neal, his grandsons Jeff Simmons and wife Annie, Steven Simmons and wife Sherri and granddaughter Crissie Simmons. Also surviving are his five great grandsons T. J., Clayton, Lane, Evan and Landyn Simmons. Sister Louise Jones of Henderson, Texas
Mr. Stokes served as a Sergeant in the Army from 1943 1946, then went in the Air Force from 1946 1949. He worked as a pipe fitter for Monsanto for 30 years.
Mr. Stokes was a member of First Baptist Church and a Scout leader for Troop 274 where he helped many young boys achieve the Eagle Scout award including his son John and grandsons Jeff and Steven. He loved working with the scouts and took them on many campouts to Camp Karawaka and even to the hill country in Austin, Texas. He also enjoyed working on the busses at the church. Mr. Stokes loved helping in any way he could with anything you ask.
Visitation for Mr. Stokes will be Thursday, April 11 at 10:00 A.M. with services following at 11:00 A.M. Pallbearers will be his grandsons Jeff and Steven, great grandsons T. J., Clayton and Lane Billy Simmons and Randy Johnston one of his former Boys Scouts also. Burial will follow at Grace Memorial Park in Hitchcock, Texas.
The family would like to thank Hospice Care Team for the love and support they gave to our family. Also a big thank you to Yolanda Giles, Sherry Boudreaux and Donna Carter for taking such good care of my dad. Gambles Personal Care home for the love and support they gave also.
