Jesse Lee "JL" Dunn III, a leader in gulf area industry and 4th generation BOI, passed away at the age of 79 early Sunday morning on July 31st, 2016 at his home in Galveston. He was born January 31st, 1937 to J.L. "Red" Dunn II an entrepreneur and business man and Beatrice Ellen Dunn née Jones, a nurse at UTMB.
J.L. is survived by his loving wife of 57 years Alicia Dunn; their three children, Peter Dunn Sr. and his wife Leisa of Galveston, David Dunn of League City and Jennifer Dunn of League City; their 6 grandchildren, Peter Dunn Jr. of Galveston, Kyle Dunn of Dickinson, Jimmy Honc of League City, Josh Honc of League City, Jessica Honc of League City and Taylor Dunn of Denver, Colorado; their 2 great grandchildren Carter Honc and Evelyn Dunn; and of course, the many friends, neighbors and colleagues who enjoyed his comradery, his insight and his loyalty. J.L. was preceded in death by his parents as well as his brother Kenneth Michael Dunn of Sugarland, Texas.
Calling hours will be held on Wednesday (Today) from 4pm to 7pm at First United Methodist Church in Dickinson. The funeral service will be held Thursday August 4th 10am, at the First United Methodist Church of Dickinson located at 200 FM 517, Dickinson, Texas. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Galveston Meals on Wheels.
Mr. Dunn was prolific in the realms of business and passionate in his participation in charity efforts and community involvement. He guided and successfully grew the Dunn Family of companies in the Petrochemical Industry including: Dunn Heat Exchangers, Dunn Equipment, Texas Matt and Rigging, Safety Shorts, and served on the board of US National Bank for over 30 years. Building on modest foundations established by the business of his father, J.L. continued to develop a legacy of lasting success which still thrives in the Dunn family through their leadership of their businesses today. Though an avid entrepreneur, J.L. still took an active and dedicated role in his community. He was a fixture at many local charity events throughout the years; he held a seat on the boards for the UTMB School of Nursing, Taxpayers Relief Council and Texas Association of Business; he was a founding member of the Texas Chemical Council among others. He was an ardent supporter of the arts and an avid outdoorsman. In his later years JL took great joy in sharing his passion for hunting and nature with his children and grandchildren. JL was active parishioner of the First United Methodist Church in Dickinson.
He shared his wealth of stories, wisdom and keen economic insight to anyone who sought his counsel, and brought his compassion, integrity and sense of humor to every environment and undertaking he was involved in. To all who had the honor of knowing Jesse, he will be greatly missed.
