Janet Lynn Powell, 56, of Texas City passed away Friday, November 18, 2016, at M. D. Anderson Hospital in Houston. She was born September 13, 1960, in Texas City, Texas, to Charles Ellis Horne, Sr., and Jo Ann Anderson Horne.
Janet graduated from Texas City High School and attended College of the Mainland before starting her career in the Accounting Department at the Amoco/BP Refinery in Texas City. She retired after thirty-one years of service.
While working at Amoco, Janet participated in the Torch Classic each year, a company-sponsored competition among all the Amoco refinery locations nationwide. She played softball on the ladies' team, but her main interest was in the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation "Kiss A Pig" contest, raising funds for research in diabetes. The Texas City Refinery was a consistent winner in this event due to Janet's dedication and efforts in raising funds. Since she had diabetes at the early age of six years old, this effort was dear to her heart.
Janet was a member of St. Mary of the Miraculous Medal Catholic Church in Texas City for 56 years. She served as a Lector at Mass. She was a member of the St. Margaret Altar Group and served on many A.C.T.S. retreat teams. She enjoyed traveling with her family to Kissimmee, Florida, each year to attend the Spring Training of the Houston Astros ball team.
Janet was preceded in death by her father, Charles E. Horne, Sr., of Texas City, Texas. She is survived by her loving husband of 35 years, William Shelby Powell of Texas City, and her precious daughter, Lauren Shelby Powell of Texas City. Janet is also survived by her mother, Jo Ann Horne; her sister, Cindy DeSanto and husband, Bobby; and her brother, Charles (Chuck) Horne and wife, Jennie, all of Texas City. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews, cousins, and other relatives, and many friends.
Visitation will be on Tuesday, November 22, 2016, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at St. Mary of the Miraculous Medal Catholic Church at 1604 Ninth Ave. N., Texas City. A vigil service will begin at 7:00 p.m. followed by a Rosary. A funeral mass will be held at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, November 23, 2016, at St. Mary of the Miraculous Medal Catholic Church with Reverend Clint Ressler, celebrant. Burial will follow at the Mount Olivet Cemetery in Dickinson.
Pallbearers will be Charles (Chuck) Horne, Bobby DeSanto, Robby DeSanto, Matthew Powers, Paul Powell, and Alan Powell.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation or the M. D. Anderson Hospital in Houston for Carcinoid Cancer Research, or the St. Mary of the Miraculous Medal Catholic Church in Texas City, Texas.
The family extends a heartfelt thank you to the M. D. Anderson Hospital and medical staff and nurses for their exceptional, loving care during Janet's long hospitalization.
