Isabel Saragoza

Isabel Saragoza, 99, of Texas City completed her journey on earth peacefully on the morning of July 8, 2015 at home surrounded by family.
She was born December 7, 1915 the precious daughter of Ysabel L. and Nasaia Melchor in Waelder Texas, a small farming town where she was raised with her 6 siblings. She married the love of her life James Lopez Saragoza May 8, 1935 in Gonzales Texas. They lived in Galveston until moving their family to Texas City in 1944. She lost her husband to the 1947 T.C. Disaster while he worked at the T.C. Terminal.
She started working to support her four children by ironing clothes and babysitting for other families. Then began cooking for Father Kukral, the Parish Priest, who considered her a saintly person. This evolved in 1957 to her becoming the cook and housekeeper for the Sisters of Charity who taught at Our Lady of Fatima School, until she retired in 1978. She remained friends with the nuns and voluntarily provided transportation for them. She enjoyed cooking delicious meals served with just the right amount of spices. Tasty homemade pastries and breads made from scratch, always plentiful. Tamales for Christmas and Buñuelos for New Years, shared with family, friends, and neighbors. She enjoyed sewing, crocheting, working in the yard and especially her flower beds. Her travels included California, Virginia, Washington D.C., Louisiana and Mexico City. She was an active member of St. Mary's Church in Texas City, attending mass daily until she quit driving.

She was predeceased by parents, husband, daughter, Lupe Ames, brothers, Catarino, Lencheo, and Inez Melchor, sisters, Martha Valdez, Tomasa Ramirez, and Tila Melchor.
