Ida Ross

Ida Morton Ross, 102, affectionately known as Mamere by her family passed away peacefully at Mainland Medical Center, Sunday, December 9, 2012. She was born in Galveston, at home, September 22, 1910, to Z.L. and Louise White. She graduated from Ball High School in 1928 and then completed a three year curriculum in one and a half years from Peabody Music Conservatory, Baltimore, MD in 1930. Upon returning to Galveston and marrying her high school sweetheart, Duncan B. Ross, in 1931, she performed as a guest artist with the Houston Symphony, Galveston Junior League, and the Galveston Civic Club.
After moving to Texas City in 1943, she taught piano, reared three children, and was music director and organistpianist at St. Georges Episcopal Church for more than fifty years.
Following the sudden death of her husband in 1964, she got her insurance license and continued operation of the Duncan Ross Insurance Agency for many years, before retiring. During her free time she enjoyed flying her Piper Cub airplane and being Galveston Countys first grandmother pilot holding a commercial license.
She was very active in many organizations throughout her life, including Daughters of the American Revolution 50 years, Colonial Dames 50 years, Huguenot Society, Texas Society of Children of the American Revolution, Independent Insurance Agents Assn. of Texas, Galveston County Council on Alcoholism, Galveston Civic Music, Galveston Music Club, Pilot Club, Mainland Opportunity School, Petticoat Flyers, 99s, Texas Private Pilots Assn., and Aircraft Owners and Pilots Assn.
Ida Morton was preceded in death by her parents Zebulon L. and Louise Robertson White brother, Z.L. White III husband, Duncan B. Ross son Duncan B. Ross, Jr. granddaughter, Carol Weeks and greatgrand daughter, Amy Weeks.
Left to cherish her memory are daughter, Ida M. Rinker granddaughter, E. Meade Rinker Bishop daughterinlaw, Monica Ross granddaughters, Lisa Ross McMillion and Erin Ross grandson, Duncan B. Ross, III son, Kent and wife Beverly Ross granddaughters, Dana Ross Teaff, and Katherine Ross Stribling three greatgrand daughters, four greatgrandsons, six nieces, and a host of other relatives and friends.
Her memorial service will be held, Saturday, December 15, 2012, 11:00 AM, at St. Georges Episcopal Church, Texas City, Texas visitation following the service and a private graveside service. The Reverend Robin Reeves will be officiating.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be given to St. Georges Episcopal Memorial Fund, the Ida M. Ross Music Scholarship Fund at College of the Mainland, or a charity of your choice.
