Helen was born in Pecan Gap, Texas in 1922. While Helen dedicated most of her 92 years to the care and support of her husband, children, and grandchildren, she was not without her own adventures. Her parents were cotton share croppers who survived the difficult times of the Great Depression. In the 1940s Helen joined the Civilian Conservation Corps developed by President Franklin D. Roosevelt to aid in the economic recovery of the country. It was during that time that Helen met the love of her life, Marvin Spencer. Soon after their courtship began Marvin was called to serve in World War II. They were married in Chattanooga, Tennessee in 1942 prior to Marvin shipping off to France. Helen found her own way to serve her country by working as a reallife Rosie the Riveter constructing airplanes to support the war effort. Her history is chronicled in the U.S. National Library of Congress. Her work was also honored at the Lone Star Flight Museum in Galveston, Texas. She loved gardening and traveling with her husband.
Helen was preceded in death by her husband of 69 years Marvin Spencer, Sr., her daughter Janice Renee Spencer, her son Robert Dale Spencer and granddaughter Angie Christine Scott.
Helen is survived by her children Marvin Jr. Sandy and Fran Spencer, Tim and Kay Spencer, Joy and Glenn Clark, Gaynell and Larry Simpson, and Carol and A.D. Looney, her grandchildren Windi and Philip Fleming, Ricky and Tracy Scott, Melissa Ramin, Daniel and Amanda Durdin, Shane and Lisa Spencer, Tim and Amanda Spencer, Joey and Emily Selesky, Jennifer and Jerry Wilson , Dustin and Stacy Durdin, Austin and Amber Looney, Jill and Jared Guss, and Brooke Looney and 23 great grandchildren.
