Evelyn Mayes

Evelyn Lillian Mayes, 84, of LaMarque, peacefully passed April 27, 2015. She was born Dec. 11, 1930 in Granger, TX. Her family moved to Texas City in 1942. She worked at the Rainbow Cafe and retired from LMISD Cafeteria. Mrs. Mayes met her soulmate, James Gorman Mayes, while volunteering after the 1947 TC Disaster and they were married on April 21, 1948. She was an assistant Cub Scout Den Leader and assistant Brownie Leader. She was a member of First United Methodist Church in LaMarque, Elks Lodge 2014, & SPJST Lodge 172 of Pasadena. She was Elk of the Year in 2002. She volunteered many hours with the Elks Lodge and always took care of everyone in need. She took care of her Aunt Ann for several years until she fell ill in Sept. 2007. She personally maintained her home & beautiful yard until that time as well. She also was a cancer survivor.

She is preceded in death by her husband, her parents, Joe & Emilie Matula, brothers Emil, Edward, & William, and sister Sybil Wood.

She is survived by her children, James (Jim) Gorman Mayes, Jr, & wife Pam of Houston, and Barbara Shields & husband, George of Houston, brothers Henry Matula of League City, Joe Matula of Robeline, LA and Theo Matula of Henderson, NV. She is also survived by her four grandchildren, Kimberly Swenson of Natalia, TX, Amy Shields of Houston, Kyle Mayes & wife Meredith of Houston and Stephanie Sanchez & husband, Joe of Pearland; Six great-grandchildren, Madeline, Avery, David, Keegan, Bryce and Christian.

A visitation will be held from 6-8pm on Wednesday, April 29, 2015 at Emken Linton Funeral Home. Her service will be held at 10:30am, Thursday, April 30, 2015, at the funeral home with Chris Norton officiating. Interment will follow at Galveston Memorial Park Cemetery, in Hitchcock. Pallbearers will be Jim Mayes, George Shields, Kyle Mayes, Joe Sanchez, Larry Rosenblad and Jim Hilsher.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to The American Cancer Society, American Heart Association, or to the charity of your choice.
