Dennis James Payne, 74, died July 8, after a long struggle with Parkinsons disease. Born in London, England May 23, 1938 he came to America with his family in 1948 as they settled in La Marque, Texas.
He is survived by his wife Janice his daughter Terry Lynn and soninlaw Jerry Stallard, his son Scott and daughterinlaw, Jeanne Payne his brother Leonard and wife Gayle Payne five grandchildren: Brian Smith, Kyle Stallard, Michaelanne Payne, Jeanne Marie Petite, Alexis Klein, and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents Fred and Mary Payne, and his brother Fred Payne.
Dennis believed in community service and became a member of the La Marque Volunteer Fire Dept. when he was still in high school. Later he became a La Marque Police Officer and then eventually served four terms as a La Marque City Councilman. He was also a member of the La Marque Jaycees and the annual Buttermilk Junction festival began during his term as president of the organization.
Other interests included golf, photography, and flying. Because he grew up in London during the Battle of Britain, he was also deeply interested in studying World War II battles and strategies.
He graduated from La Marque High School and then obtained an Associates TechnicalMechanical Degree from University of Houston. He retired from GAF Chemicals as a plant supervisor.
A visitation will be held at 6:00 p.m. Monday July 16 at EmkenLinton Funeral Home in Texas City, with services following at 7:00 p.m.
