Claude Akers

Claude Lee Akers, 89, of Texas City, passed away Monday, July 30, 2012, at Mainland Memorial Hospital.

Funeral services will be held 10:00 A.M., Wednesday, August 1, 2012, at Memorial Lutheran Church, 2021 29th Street N, Texas City, TX 77590. Burial will follow at Forest Park East Cemetery in Webster. Visitation will be at 9:30 A.M., Wednesday, August 1, 2012 also at Memorial Lutheran Church in Texas City.

Claude was born October 6, 1922 in Rural Retreat, Virginia to the late James Lacy Akers and Callie Newland Akers. He attended Lenoir Rhyne College in Hickory, N.C. He retired from Union Carbide where he worked as a chemist and laboratory supervisor for thirtynine years and was also a member of the Carbide Retirees Chapter. He was a member of Memorial Lutheran Church in Texas City, served on the church council and was a committee member for the Boy Scout Troop.

For fortyfive years, he was a member of the Texas City Masonic Lodge 1118 AF and AM. He was a 32nd degree Scottish Rite Mason, a member of the El Mina Shrine and a life member of the Shrine drum and bugle corps. He was past President of the Mainland Shrine Club. He also played music with the Clems Clams Dance Band for over 25 years, was an amateur radio operator and did some work in communications with the Galveston County Civil Defense Organization.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. A.L. Akers his wife of sixtytwo years Louise Asbury Akers his brothers Wilson Bill Akers, S.B. Chub Akers, I.N. Akers and Woodrow Akers.

Survivors include his daughter Bette Leimer and husband Mike son Don Akers grandsons Michael Leimer Jr. and wife Tammy, Philip Leimer and wife Phu and Scott Leimer and wife Trisha 7 greatgrandchildren and numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives.

Pallbearers are Michael Leimer Jr., Philip Leimer, Scott Leimer, Ted Mahoney, John Harmon and Lemuel Powell.

The family would like to thank Josie Torres caregiver for all the loving care provided.

In lieu of flowers, the family has asked for donations to be made to Memorial Lutheran Church.
