Aline Hammond

Aline Bartosh Hammond went to be with the Lord on March 16, 2016. Mere words are inadequate to encompass her life of surpassing love and devotion to her husband, her family, her students, her patients, and countless friends.

Aline was born on May 24, 1927 in Weimar, Texas. A cheerleader at Weimar High School, she graduated in 1944. As a Cadet Nursing Corps member, she graduated from St. Joseph School of Nursing in 1947, with post graduate work in pediatric nursing. In 1950, after earning her B.S. degree in nursing, Aline worked at St. Joseph's Hospital, in private nursing, and later at Danforth Hospital in Texas City, and Galveston County Memorial Hospital.

Aline was instrumental in establishing the nursing program at College of the Mainland, teaching there for 2 years. After two years, every nursing student in her first class graduated and passed their State Board of Nursing exams.

Aline married Ivan Hammond on Feb. 3, 1951, at Annunciation co-cathedral in Houston, Texas. She was a member of St. Mary of the Miraculous Medal Catholic church in Texas City for sixty-four years. She was also a member of St. Mary's Altar Society, Catholic Daughters of America, and the church choir.

Many enjoyed Aline's luminous soprano voice in the choir; she was frequently invited to sing at weddings and funerals. She found an abundant joy in singing - everything from lullabies to show tunes - to her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, also encouraging their pursuit of the arts. A stunning beauty herself, there was no escaping her aura of joy- she drew you into it. On myriad nights, while washing dishes, she regaled the house with songs from The Sound of Music, in truth, Aline never missed a note, once she was in voice.

Aline loved cultivating her gardens, where she grew various-colored flowers, succulent; flowering trees and shrubs, citrus trees, and passion vines, in particular. She appreciated the beauty of the world as it passed her by, which in her mind, was linked to the beauty of the other world. Appropriately, she had small collections of sea shells, angel figurines, and other small items.

Aline was preceded in death by her parents, James and Mary Bartosh of Weimar, TX., her sister, Carolyn Harmon of Waco, TX, and her daughter Cynthia Hammond Touchstone of Houston, TX. She leaves behind her loving husband of 65 years, Ivan Hammond, sister, Ann Gillespie of Houston, and brother, Jim Bartosh & wife Trish of Rosebud, TX. Brother-in-law, Sedley Hammond of Keithville, La. Four loving children, Bruce (Sandy) Hammond, Claudia (Rick) Brown, Lynn Payton, Patrick (Kirn) Hammond, 11 grandchildren, 7 great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.
