ALFRED BOYD COUCH, JR.

Alfred Couch, Jr., 89, of Texas City, passed away Friday, February 21, 2014, at Mainland Medical Center.

Funeral Mass will be 11:00 A.M., Wednesday, February 26, 2014 at St. Mary of The Miraculous Medal Catholic Church in Texas City. Burial will follow at Galveston Memorial Park Cemetery in Hitchcock, Texas. Visitation will be 5:00 to 7:00 P.M., Tuesday, February 25, 2014, followed by a Rosary beginning at 7:00 P.M., at EmkenLinton Funeral Home.

Mr. Couch was born November 9, 1924 in Milford, Texas. He retired May 3, 1991 as Postmaster of Texas City after 45 years of service and two and half years of government service U.S. Marine Corps. In 1946 he served as a sub mail clerk carrier, a temporary window clerk, group leader, station superintendent, foreman of mails. He served as assistant postmaster from 1965 to 1969, officer in charge from March 1969 to November 1970, and finally postmaster November 1970 to May 1991. He was the last Postmaster in the United States to be officially appointed by the President of The United States. He was in the Marine Corps from May 1943 to February 1946. He attended Texas AM University. He was a member of Knights of Columbus Council 3217 Dickinson, National Association of Postmasters, National League of Postmasters and Texas City Noon Optimist Club. He was a member of St. Mary of the Miraculous Medal Catholic Church in Texas City.

Preceded in death by his wife, Joyce Ann Vogg Couch his parents, Alfred Boyd Couch, Sr. and Maude Alice Hull Couch sisters,Tennie Carson and Alice Chuoke.

Survivors include his son, Michael B. Couch and wife Carolyn of League City sisters, Patsy Cunningham of Houston and Doris Cason of Little Elm.

The family wants to give thanks to Deacon Joe Hensley and Frances Trepagnier for their continued spiritual support.

The family wishes to express special thanks to Ruth Gary, Henrietta Nelson, Nacale Hackney, and Brenda Sowell, for the love, devotion, and care that was given to Mr. Couch.
